An admin decides, based on the photos you upload. They judge its condition, how in-demand it is and how rare it is. They can only value what they can see, so clear photos of the covers, spine and any wear help you get a fair value. You'll see the result under Your activity in your account, and on the book's cover once it's in the catalog.

That value works both ways: it's what you earn for sharing the book, and what the next reader spends to borrow it.

When a hand-over isn't completed, the sender gets a black star. Three black stars block the account, and its owner is asked to contact an admin.

A hand-over counts as not completed if the borrower reports that the book never arrived (after 24 hours, or straight away if the sender said they'd handed it over), or if the sender doesn't hand it over within 7 days of accepting. Senders can mark a book as handed over, and borrowers confirm when they've got it. If a star was a mistake, an admin can take it back.

• An owner's email and phone stay hidden until they accept your request. Owners are only asked once you request their book.
• Every book has a unique ID (LIB-0001…) on a label inside the cover.
• The borrower confirms on the site when they have the book, and a missed hand-over earns the sender a black star.
• Only verified members can borrow.

Return date: the person sharing a book chooses how long you can keep it, and you see that before you ask. The clock starts when you confirm you have the book. Library-owned books are lent for 14 days. Give it back to its owner (or at the hub) and tap I returned it. The owner then confirms.

Lost: a book that isn't returned within 10 days of its return date counts as lost. The borrower then loses 5 credits and the owner receives 5 credits. If the book turns up, the credits are put back. We'll email a reminder when it's overdue.

Damaged (torn pages, water): replace the book. Normal reading wear is fine.

Your credit balance can go below zero. At -10 credits your account is locked and you'll be asked to contact an admin. Sharing a book earns credits back.

No ads. No spam. No selling books. The Library doesn't currently collect any money from members.Anything left after costs stays in a reserve for books and logistics. Every decision is shared openly with members.
